Modern Day Griot

Tempest Williams is a Houston-based multidisciplinary artist and visual storyteller from the historic Greater Fifth Ward. known for creating richly layered works that investigate Black memory, spirituality, resilience, and cultural inheritance. Rooted in the historic Greater Fifth Ward, her practice spans collage, assemblage, sculpture, and installation, transforming found materials and symbolic imagery into deeply immersive visual narratives.

Positioning herself within the tradition of the modern-day griot, Williams merges contemporary aesthetics with ancestral storytelling to explore themes of survival, migration, labor, and identity within the Black American experience. Her work balances monumentality and intimacy, preserving community histories while interrogating the evolving realities of the present.

Williams has exhibited at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Project Row Houses, Winston Contemporary Art Gallery, and institutions throughout Texas and the Gulf South. Her practice continues to expand through sculptural and installation-based works that bridge cultural memory with contemporary art discourse.
